Designer Shilpi Sonar designs the most flamboyant residence that the city of Raigarh has ever seen… immersing it in a theatrical Moroccan theme…
Working on a sprawling 10,000 square feet footprint, Shilpi Sonar translates the superlative dream of the homeowners – to live in an abode that not just enunciates their lifestyle choices but also their growth – into a thematic, luxuriously opulent home. Specifically, one that a place like Raigarh has hitherto never witnessed.
Taking inspiration from the riads of Marakkech and elements from Casablanca architecture, the design imbibes Moroccan and Arabic motifs translating them into superlative traditional Indian patterns. Combining the elements of luxury and uncomplicated yet intricate designs, the interior envelope is chiselled in a royal desert-dusk colour palette, with aristocratic hues like gold, silver, and champagne through polish and leafing, rich elaborate woodwork, metal cutwork, glass, mirror and stonework, and hand-painted ceilings and murals.
With simultaneous emphasis on grandeur and cosiness, palace-like ambiences are carefully tailored with bespoke motifs and consequent themes. Rich colours like deep red and royal blue and golden yellow juxtapose with soft pastels like sky blue, peach, and pink, not just slicing through the aristocratic aura and inviting warmth and sensitivity; but fittingly accentuating the imperial aura of the bungalow.
Given the social circle and entertaining lifestyle of the family, the living areas are markedly differentiated into public, semi-public and private. The entrance foyer leads to a grand drawing-room, post which a subtle partition with motifs demarcates the end of the public area and conveys transition to a more private area, like the pooja room. The most private spaces, like the bedrooms, are kept farthest away from the entry point. The ground-plus-one bungalow has its living room and the guest bedroom opening out to sprawling lawns, and separate entries for the servant quarters and the utility areas.
The highlight of the project is the double-height living and dining rooms, where one can absorb the amount of luxury this bungalow has without going into the semi-private or private areas. The 9-feet tall windows here fill the interiors with daylight. At the same time, the windows are adorned with especially designed drapes having danglers with Arabic motifs to keep out the scorching summer sun.
Almost every process, every minute detail is either custom designed or handpicked, right down to the towels and the crockery and cutlery that would define the royal lifestyle experience. Air-conditioning is central and ornate chandeliers cast a warm glow of yellow lights keeping the ambience as authentic as possible.
But the true showstopper is the marriage of contemporaneity into the ornamental details. Colourful marble is delicately blended with mouldings in the washrooms. Emblems symbolising Moroccan royalty subtly demarcate spaces differentiating the hallway from the living area, the almost natural blend of contemporary furniture with old-world furnishings, drapery styles, woodwork detailing and the like…
As designer Shilpi Sonar concludes, “The thing about designing a residence of this magnitude and luxury is that every bit has to be thought in multiple layers”.
